The groove in the post serves a different function than other styles of post earrings.  The latch fits in the groove, not as a safety stop for a titanium backer.  Because of the size, these smaller Titanium hoops are stiff; you may be able to get away without  wearing a backer.   Silicone backers are provided for comfort.

The smaller coiled hoop can be adjusted to fit thicker earlobes...the 3/4" twisted hoop cannot.

I LOVE HOOPS!!  I wanted a hoop that looked heavy, but was not weighty...and it had to fit my normal piercing.  The properties of Titanium allow me to have the look that I want using a larger 17 GA wire, without the weight.   Designing a latch out of 20 GA wire that would be functional and attractive took a little more thought.   The "S" shaped latch was designed specifically for this type of hoop earring providing STYLE AND FUNCTION!   Break-away latch is kind to your ears when snagged or pulled.
